Common Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is a timeless woodland native, with its tall, stately spires of bell-shaped flowers that add architectural interest to any garden. It thrives in the dappled shade of the British countryside, producing rosettes of soft, hairy leaves in its first year followed by a spectacular summer display of purple, pink, or occasionally white blooms. Hardy and reliable, it sings out for cottage garden planting and wildlife-friendly spaces. Do not consume- highly toxic

Uses & Expert Tips

Safety & Folklore

  • Toxicity: CRITICAL WARNING — All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested and may cause skin irritation. Do not consume. Always wear gloves when handling and keep away from children and pets.
  • Medicine: Contains digitalis (digoxin), a potent chemical used in modern medicine to treat heart conditions, though it is never safe for self-medication.
  • Magic: Historically known as witches gloves or fairy thimbles, it was believed to protect homes from evil or allow foxes to sneak silently through the woods.

Expert Care Tips: To extend your flowering display, cut the main central flower spike back to the base once it has finished blooming. This encourages the plant to produce several smaller or prince flower spikes from the sides, prolonging the flowering season. To ensure a permanent presence in your garden, leave at least one spike to mature and self-seed naturally.
