Red Welsh Onion (Allium fistulosum 'Red') A hardy perennial with a ruby-red twist at the bases. A native of Asia, this non-bulbing variety is prized by chefs for its vibrant, red-tinged stem bases and mild, white-onion flavour. Unlike standard spring onions, this is a clump-forming herb that provides a sustainable and long harvest.

Perfect as an edible ornamental, it thrives in decorative pots or kitchen borders, producing large, creamy white globe flowers on thick, architectural stems. The blooms are both a magnet for pollinators and a delicious edible garnish. Ideal for adding a fresh onion kick to salads, stir-fries, or authentic Jamaican and Asian cooking.

Uses & Expert Tips

In the Kitchen & Bar

Asian & Jamaican Cuisine: The red-tinged stems are a staple in Asian stir-fries and Jamaican escallion dishes. Use them to provide a mild, sweet depth to curries, rice, and peas.

Raw Finish: Slice the stems thinly on a bias to showcase the red-to-green gradient. They are perfect for topping ramenpho, or tacos where a crisp, professional garnish is needed.

Edible Blooms: Don't waste the flowers! Pull apart the large creamy globes and scatter the individual florets over salads or omelettes for a mild, peppery onion note.

Expert Care Tips:

To keep the red colour vibrant at the base of the onion, ensure the plant gets plenty of sunlight. If the bases are buried too deep in the soil, the colour may fade—keep the blush part of the stem just at the surface of the earth.
