The Welsh Onion (Allium fistulosum) is the ultimate cut-and-come-again staple for a sustainable kitchen garden. Unlike common onions that are harvested once, this hardy perennial onion forms permanent, ever-expanding clumps of hollow, tubular leaves. A native of Asia despite its name, it is a remarkably resilient, providing a long season of mild, onion-flavoured greens.

Whether grown in a dedicated herb border or a patio pot, its architectural creamy white globe flowers make it as beautiful as it is productive. Perfect for those who want a never-ending harvest of fresh spring onions without the need for seasonal replanting.

CHELSEA GOLD QUALITY TO YOUR DOOR

The Grower's Guide: From Soil to Plate

Grown on-site in Gloucestershire, your herbs and edible plants will arrive happy in peat-free compost and recyclable pots, all snugly tucked into sturdy cardboard packaging.

Plant Key Features

  • Common Name: Welsh Onion / Perennial Spring Onion / Ciboule / Japanese bunching onion / Scallion
  • Botanical Name: Allium fistulosum
  • Plant Type: Hardy Herbaceous Perennial (Bulbous)
  • Hardiness: Fully Hardy (UK Zone H7); stays green year-round.
  • Mature Size: 30cm–45cm Height x 30cm Spread (Clump-forming).
  • Foliage & Flower: Hollow green tubes; large globe-shaped white drumstick flowers.
  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade; very adaptable.
  • Soil: Rich, fertile soil; tolerates most well-drained soil types.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance; simply snip outer leaves as needed and divide clumps every 3-4 years.
  • Pollinator Value: Exceptional; a bees favourite in early summer.
  • Pot Size: Supplied in a 9cm recyclable pot.

Uses & Expert Tips

In the Kitchen & Bar

  • Authentic Cuisine: A vital ingredient in Jamaican and Asian cooking. Use the stems as escallion to season rice and peas, or flash-fry the white bases in stir-fries for a sweet, mild crunch.
  • Salads & Slaws: Finely slice the hollow tubes to add a mild, sweet onion bite to fresh salads, potato salads, or homemade coleslaw.
  • Soup & Stew Base: Because they are more robust than supermarket spring onions, they hold their shape beautifully when added to soups, ramen, or miso.
  • Edible Flowers: The white spherical flowers are entirely edible! Pull them apart and scatter the tiny florets over dishes for a decorative, peppery onion zing.

Expert Care Tips:

The more you harvest Welsh Onions, the more they grow. To ensure a constant supply of tender stems, always harvest from the outside of the clump and never take more than a third of the plant at once. For the best results, harvest whole clumps in June to refresh the growth, or snip individual leaves year-round.
