Woolly Thyme (Thymus pseudolanuginosus) forms a remarkably dense, felt-like carpet of tiny, silver-grey leaves. This exceptionally low-growing, hardy evergreen perennial is a fabulous choice for adding texture between paving stones or as a drought-tolerant lawn alternative. In summer, it produces soft pink flowers that attract pollinators, reaching a height of just 5cm.

Grown on-site in Gloucestershire, your herbs and edible plants will arrive happy in peat-free compost and recyclable pots, all snugly tucked into sturdy cardboard packaging.

  • Maintenance: Very low maintenance; it naturally suppresses weeds by forming a tight carpet.
  • Pollinator Value: Even though the flowers are tiny, bees including solitary bees love them.
  • Pot Size: Supplied in a 9cm recyclable pot. 

Uses & Expert Tips

In the Kitchen & Bar 

  • Visual Garnish: While edible, it is primarily grown for its looks. Use the frosted silver leaves to decorate a winter-themed dessert platter.
  • Stepping Stones: The best variety for planting in path crevices; walking on it releases a gentle, earthy thyme scent.
  • Sensory Styling: Its unique texture makes it a must-have for a tactile patio pot—you won't be able to stop touching it! 

Expert Care Tips: 

  • Winter Drainage: Because of its hairy leaves, Woolly Thyme can be sensitive to damp winter weather. To keep the silver carpet of furry foliage looking pristine, plant it on a slight slope or with a layer of grit underneath the stems to ensure they stay dry and rot-free. Do not plant in heavy clay sites, no Thyme likes sitting in wetness.
  • Establishment: It needs about 8–12 weeks to establish before it can handle regular foot traffic. If people step on it immediately after planting, the young stems might snap before they've rooted.
  • Planting Density: For a carpet effect within one season, we suggest 6–9 plants per square metre.

Prefer to collect? We offer a free Click & Collect service from our Newent nursery. As we are a working specialist herb nursery, visits and collections are strictly by appointment only, so we recommend collection during the following windows:

  • Collection Days: Mondays & Wednesdays
  • Collection Times: 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
