Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a hardy, native wildflower and the backbone of the traditional cottage garden. Beyond its feathery foliage and flat white flower clusters, Yarrow is a powerful "dynamic accumulator" that heals the soil by mining deep-seated nutrients like potassium and phosphorus. This drought-tolerant perennial is a premier nectar source for pollinators and a vital companion plant that improves the health of your entire garden.

Uses & Expert Tips

In the Kitchen

  • Salads & Garnish: Use young, tender leaves sparingly for a mild, peppery, and slightly medicinal flavour—perfect for garnishing rustic savoury tarts or terrines.
  • Wellness Tea: Traditionally used in herbalism for its soothing properties; the dried leaves make a gentle, earthy herbal tea.
  • Heritage Healing: Historically known as "Stanchweed" or "Soldier’s Woundwort," Yarrow has been used since ancient times to help stem blood flow and soothe minor skin irritations.
  • Visual Styling: An excellent dried flower; the stems hold their shape and colour beautifully for everlasting interior arrangements.

Expert Growing Tips

A Great Companion: Plant Yarrow near your other herbs and vegetables. Its deep roots cycle minerals to the subsoil, while its nectar-rich umbels attract good bugs like ladybirds to keep garden pests like aphids in check.

Pro Tip for More Blooms: To get the most out of your plant, cut back the flower stalks once they fade. This encourages a second flush of blooms in late summer. For a total refresh, you can even cut the foliage back hard to the soil level to keep it looking lush and green.
